If a shot is INSIDE the brush, you
must call brushing early to maximize the outward slide which will greatly increase
the chance of saving the shot.
After release, the rock is on its outward slide before it reaches its
apex and turns in. There is some curl during this travel as the rock is overcoming the
outward slide direction forces away from the centerline. BUT, since this is the high
velocity straight travel zone, you can gain considerable savings from the inside
missed shot by extending the outward slide which translates into less overall curl inward.
The Red rock depicts the advantage of, particularly, calling early brushing.
Brushing after the rock turns the tangent point will also decrease curl
and help save the inside the brush delivery.
Of course, if the shot is also heavy as in a draw weight shot
situation, early brushing will extend the overall rock travel distance. "Slow
side" brushing will minimize curl while extending travel at a slightly reduced rate
from x-brushing.
"Slow side" brushing in the above example would be
accomplished by brushing the 2-1/2" side on the inside/centerline or bottom half of
these rocks. They are turning counterclockwise to curl to the left (rightee outurn). |
How does a skip notice a small
3" error in delivery line? First off, the skip is standing upright with legs apart
and perpendicular to the desired delivery line. He is standing to give every
psychological and physical advantage to his shooter. He IS NOT turning to look at the
people behind the glass and is not looking at other sheet's activity.
Physical depth and line evaluation is experienced by the shooter by
sighting on the brush BUT the mind is considering the bigger picture of the skip's body.
After the release, the skip squats and sights down the brush handle to note the precise
delivery line. He will move sideways to the correct line which HELPS the brushers realize
the ongoing scenario.
The skip has called brushing for the inside shot but the body movement
informs the shooter AND brushers what the delivery line is as compared to the desired
brush placement. It is much easier to use the squat and brush site/aim system to readily
see a delivery deviation.
The shooter should NOT consider the skips motion as a "put
down" but a chance to learn and it helps the brushers make YOUR MISSED shot!
For the outside of the brush line of sight shot, the brushers are
immediately aware (if the skip moves laterally to the actual delivery line) and x-face
brushing for weight will further hold the rock wider yet.
This immediate skip body movement gives the fastest and most accurate
early feeling to the brushers for the amount of missed delivery. The skip and brushers
will very soon be communicating verbally, but their early visual advantage is already at
work.
