CURLING 2000
Brush -- Homemade

The shaft installation angle of the Brownie is wrong. Buy the "Hammer" because the vertical angle is adjustable AND you can buy the sheepskin cover.
Building your high-tech "rock moving" brush from a too big 8" Brownie:
While the Brownie is not made right in my view -- The shaft is installed at a too low angle and not 15 degrees from vertical to allow "vertical" no-strain brushing. The nylon cover, like all nylon covered brushes wear out pebble and do not do the job of "lapping" the pebble tops to gain the smoothest configuration. Rock moving brushing without wearing out pebble (you don't need to or want to wear pebble tops) concerns itself with polishing the pebble tops.
This is accomplished with a soft brush head AND soft brush fabric SHEEPSKIN or "carpet"- NOT NYLON. Available only from Hammer.
To build:
1. Separate the base from the sponge head.
2. Remove metal staples in the 5-3/8'ths cut zone. The sponge head will be cut 5-3/8ths"wide and the wood top will be cut at a 5-1/2" width.
3. Cut both pieces with
bandsaw.

You now have the above configuration after cutting and reassemble.
At this point, if you want the brush to be "pretty," cover only the bottom sponge half by stapling on wool duffle material. Material available from SOME fabric shops.
If you only want a "van Gogh" abstract and not a
Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa, proceed to the quick cover method shown below.
On the left is the "quick cover" method and wool duffle is applied with an electric stapler to the upper half of the brush head.
Wool only lasts about 60 games, so many people will need to re-cover their
van Gogh abstract twice a season.
I play between 160-210 games a year and brushing about half (I skip some) so I re-cover twice a season. If you but "The HAMMER" remember to get two heads as you will soon wear out the sheepskin with heavy weight brushing in the vertical.

We are here looking at a brushing tool and not a work of art. The only thing wrong with this brush redesign is the hole not drilled at 15 degrees from the vertical so you will be brushing on the edge somewhat AND the brush handle is only long enough for a 5 foot curler. click on: brushing stance Discussions are underway with a manufacturer so, MAYBE, you will be able to buy the TECH brush with a universal handle length of 5' - 6" which will need to be cut down to the curler's shoulder height. And maybe someday, available at Wal-Mart or your club's curling Pro-Shop!!
