| GLOSSARY cont. CLEAN
HOUSE
A strategy of minimizing rocks in play to reduce the possibility of high scoring by both
teams or to keep the button approach area open for the last rock.
COUNTER
Any stone in the house or touching the 12' ring that may be a point at the end of play.
CRASH
As in, "the shooter crashed on a guard." The shooter rock failed to accomplish
the skips intended plan because it struck another rock.
CURLING
A game of skill and integrated thought played on ice, the magic surface, in which you can
accomplish what you dare to dream if you are willing to live the commitment of
applying knowledgeable effort over a substantial period of time.
CURLING ETIQUETTE
Gracious curling play such that if you do inadvertently whack your opponent with a brush;
you must say,"Im sorry."
CUTTER
Word normally used as a misnomer by calling it a stone that curls excessively. In
actuality, a cutter is a rock that tends to run straight due to the running surface
configuration. A straight runner rock will have a narrow running surface (less than 1/8
inch) and/or may have relatively sharp edges (lead and cup) which exhibit more
"shear" friction than "snowplow" friction on pebbled ice. Most rocks
exhibit cutter action in the first end when pebble is being sheared/knocked down. The rock
runs slow and straight (little or no curl).
DEAD HANDLE
A stone released with no imparted turn or a rock that "goes dead handle" if
rotation stops during its travel down the sheet.
DEFLECTION: See Angle of Deflection
DEFLECTION
A rock can be moved laterally without being touched and without any curl by a special brushing procedure. Curl can be stopped (negative
deflection) and the rock positive deflected in the opposite to curl direction!!
DOUBLE
TAKEOUT
The shooter rock removes two rocks from play whether the opponents or not.
DRAW WEIGHT
The momentum required by the shooter rock to reach the desired house area.
