| GLOSSARY cont.
FROSTY ICE
A layer of ice crystals that may or may not look white that
"grow" as moist warm air comes in contact with sheet ice. Frost
"re-grows" micro-seconds after brushing.
FROZEN/WELDED
A rock position in which one rock is physically touching another rock.
GRIP
The technique used to grasp the rock handle.
GUARD
A stone that is placed in play to shield another rock from a hit,
protect a desirable spot in the area of play, or that may be raised or otherwise moved to
the benefit of the shooting team.
HACK/STARTING BLOCK
The footholds (for left or right curlers) at the opposite ends of the
sheet from which the curler aligns the body for initial launch with the toe of the foot.
It should be noted that a few clubs utilize a hack with one foot hold on centerline.
A further note, unlike track and field starting blocks, the curling
hack is used only to resist the equal and opposite force of the body moving forward to
deliver the rock and not to be used as a starting block "push off."If you
have observed the "pros" on TV, you will see some curlers "push off"
the hack causing a body rotation. They must resist this torque by throwing the trailing
foot out to the side to resist this rotational force. Obviously, this delivery makes
unnecessary additional factors complicating the delivery which should be made as simple as
possible.
HACK WEIGHT
For the present ice friction conditions and without brushing, a rock
delivered with enough momentum such that if it did not hit an obstacle/rock it would stop
at the far hack.
HAIR
A pig or horse hair bristle from a brush or human "hair."
HAMMER
The last stone of the end. In "strategy," it is important to
be able to deliver the last rock.
HEART
The crest awarded to team members to signify winning a
provincial/territorial championship.
