| GLOSSARY cont. HEAVY
A stone delivered with more momentum/weight than called for by the
skip.
HEAVY ICE / SLOW ICE
When ice friction conditions are at a level to cause a rock to traverse
hogline to hogline in less than 13 seconds while stopping at the far "T"-line.
HERRINGBONE ICE
The marks on the ice whether visible or not visible made by the ice
technicians "ice shaving" machine when the blade is angled while
shaving/preparing the ice surface. The "marks" have the same affect on a rock as
angle mowing grass has on a golf ball.
HIT
The takeout or movement of an object rock when struck by the shooter.
HOCKEY ICE ARENA ICE
A hockey arena ice sheet adapted for use as curling ice.
HOGLINE
One of two such lines 72' apart separating the two in-play areas at
each end of the sheet. The curlers hand must be removed from the delivered stone
before it clears the near hogline (Canadian rules) and is in-play if it clears/stops past
the far hogline and does not touch the side boards/lines.
HOUSE
The rings plus the playing area the width of a rock around the 12'
circle toward which play is directed.
HURRY
Command given by the skip to brush vigorously i.e., fast and hard.
ICE
The estimated distance/curl as measured from the center of the target
brush to the point on the ice at which the center of the shooter rock is to stop (draw).
Or (hit) the target point on or near an object rock that the center of the shooter
would pass if the object rock was theoretically lifted vertically to allow the shooter to
pass.
IMAGERY
The mental visualization of a stationary situation, a scene, in
contrast to visualization which infers the mental picturing of motion.
