GLOSSARY cont.

wpe4.jpg (1566 bytes)  PEEL
A high speed takeout shot that removes one or more stones from play and which the shooter rock usually rebounds out of play.

wpe5.jpg (1735 bytes)  PEEL WEIGHT
The highest weight/velocity that is normally used in curling. High speed is desirable to minimize curl because of the need for precision hitting.

wpe6.jpg (1804 bytes)  PICK
Objects picked up (deposited/adhered to the rock’s running surface) which will cause a radical change in friction conditions and subsequent erratic rock motion. See "hard" pick and "soft" pick.

 wpe7.jpg (3003 bytes)   PORT/PORTAL
An opening of 11-18" between two rocks that may or may not be staggered allowing passage of the shooter rock which is 11" in diameter.

 wpe8.jpg (2473 bytes)   RAISE
A hit on an object rock that promotes it ahead in play or onto another stationary rock (double raise).

wpe9.jpg (2925 bytes)   READING THE ICE
The analysis of more than 20 physical variables that affect the amount of lateral/sideways rock movement from the delivered target brush line to the rock's final unaided stopping spot on the ice due to the imparted turn. Understanding the changes in ice friction conditions which affect rock speed as well as curl.

wpeA.jpg (2103 bytes)    READING THE CURL
Analysis of the specific variables that affect rock speed and travel path, particularly the amount of lateral rock movement from the delivered line to target rock or spot on the ice due to the imparted turn.

wpeB.jpg (1894 bytes)     RELEASE
In the rock delivery sequence, the final removal of the hand from the rock before the rock clears (Canadian rules) the near hogline.

 wpeC.jpg (3052 bytes)   RINGS
The concentric circles (black bands) inscribing differing colors for visibility which are drawn/painted or decals placed on the rink base (concrete or sand) over which approximately 1" or more of water is flooded to form the "sheet ice."
