| GLOSSARY cont. STRAIGHT HANDLE
See "dead handle." A rock released without turn.
STRAIGHT HANDLE
During delivery, aligning the handle parallel to the centerline with
either turn applied at release.
SWEEPING
The action of moving a broom back and forth in the path of a rock.
Sweeping should not be confused with "brushing" since it is a different motion.
SWINGY ICE
Ice with friction characteristics that cause greater than usual curl
(more than 3').
TAKEOUT
Removal or movement of one or more object rocks. A raise takeout is
made by hitting the first object rock with the shooter and that object rock inturn strikes
another rock. Either rock or rocks may be knocked out of play.
TEE-LINE
The line that runs through the center of the house rings at right
angles with the centerline.
TEN AND TWO
Ten/10:00 oclock rock handle position. During the initial point
of the delivery sequence, the holding of the rock at an angle with the centerline such
that the handle points at the 10:00 oclock position.
TWO/2:00 oclock rock handle position. During the initial point of the
delivery sequence, the holding of the rock at an angle with the centerline such that the
handle points at the 2:00 oclock position.
Note: It should be noted that using this technique of delivery of pre-imparted
turn causes a different line of force up the arm for each cocked rock position, so you
must practice each delivery separately as it introduces more variables.
This is the primary reason that some curlers have difficulty with out-turns. If
the curler used only the initial 12:00 oclock position for every delivery and
imparted the turn at release, the body would only need to be "trained" using one
line of force up the arm and every delivery would be the same whether in-turn or out-turn!
