Chapter 1 TS 1.5 cont.:
Porcelain rock inserts fail:Visit: illegalbrushing
16. Why "brush the handle?"
Because, the handle is 5" and centered over the rock bolt center
of rotation precisely above the 5" running surface on the bottom of the rock. So
naturally you would only swish your brush back and forth the 5".

Why are the new wide and thick brush heads less effective as a smaller
brush when not applied to the ice
properly? Why brush the rock plus a few extra inches of
rink while wasting valuable energy that should be used to brush/crush the three types of
ice crystals that grow in the ice temperature range of 18-31 degrees F?
17. ROCK MECHANICS. Why rocks do not act exactly like pool balls?
18. Why can the CCA taught "grip" lead to the thrown out elbow
syndrome causing the curler to miss the brush. Only two curlers in the 1997 and 1998 Brier
and the 1997 and 1998 Worlds use the precise CCA grip and rock release method. Are all the
pros doing something wrong that the CCA knows about and they don't?
Actually, the CCA and the pros teach and use the WRONG delivery
system!!!!
19. Why did Mike Harris, a consistently high level curler and great
ambassador and champion for Canada, not attain his goal of good curling during the Olympic
finals? And it was not psychological?
20. Why is it critical to keep your shoulders level on delivery?
21. Why is it critical to rotate the rock about its center of inertia, rock bolt? Why
aren't rock handles redesigned to have a small circular ridge/ bump on the handle at the
rock bolt center to indicate to the shooter where to precisely place his hand over the
rock bolt/center of rotation?
22. How can you learn to time yourself to rock release from backline to
hogline within 0.25 seconds (resulting in rock travel within approximately 8-12 feet of
overall rock travel) - in your head? Personally, I can time myself to 0.1 second with
consistent weekly practice |
23. How and why you should use your hack foot
TOE as a RUDDER and BRAKE?
24. How and why you should use your hack foot merely as a fulcrum to fall
from and not use it for excessive "leg drive?" You use the slider leg drive to
gain body momentum which translates into rock momentum. Trunk mass x acceleration = force.
The body throws the rock AND not the arm!
25. How can you learn to throw, uniformly, two rocks at a time to; match
rocks and study brushing techniques and brushes?
26. Why do many professionals vary the number of rotations from 1-1/4 to
2-1/2 revs. during draw weight release and then wonder why there is more or less curl?
Sweepers must analyze rotations as well as rock velocity when communicating with the skip.
27. Why does rock vibration contribute to make the ice on ice friction
level of a rock on pebbled curling ice as low as steel ball bearings on steel races? There is still one more question my Aussie friend from "down under" has
brought up as to why he has to put Velcro on their rocks to keep them from flying off the
ice into space?
After studying the 200+
major variables the curling gods have dumped on us, I am willing to accept his Velcro
story at face value because every time I think I have a plausible solution to a curling
problem, Mother Nature slaps me with another!
